Vince Dooley, tenured collegiate football coach of more than 30 years and author, will visit Paulding at the Chamber of Commerce’s Georgia Power Luncheon on Aug. 5.

“We are excited to host Coach Dooley in Paulding County and are looking forward to his presentation,” said Carolyn Delamont, President and CEO of the chamber.

Dooley was the head coach for the University of Georgia from 1964 to 1988, and during that position became the athletic director, assumed that role in 1979 and remained until 2004. Dooley helped secure a national championship in 1980, six SEC championships, and a total 201 wins, 77 losses, and 10 draws throughout his coaching career. His teams through the years were renowned for playing hardball defense and conservative, though effective offense Dooley furthermore accumulated personal awards such as the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 1976 and an additional 11 coaching and management awards. Five of those coaching awards were SEC Coach of the Year honors and he earned a place in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1978. Earlier this year, Dooley was honored with the “Bear” Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dooley’s latest book “Vince Dooley’s Garden, The Horticultural Journey of a Football Coach” shares his zest for gardening and explains how his knowledge started late but stretches across the world, unquenched. The journey sometimes grazes his football career. Dooley will have his latest book for sale and in addition will have his past works “Dooley: My Forty Years at Georgia,” “Tales of the 1980 National Champions,” “How Bout Them Dawgs,” written especially for children up to age seven, and “Then Vince said to Herschel.” Fans may also purchase collectors’ prints, caps and Bulldog bottle poppers.

The luncheon will be held at the Paulding County Senior Community Center and features Credit Union of Georgia as a sponsor. The event begins with networking at 11 a.m., with lunch beginning at noon and concluding by 1 p.m.

The cost for the luncheon is $15 for Paulding Chamber members and $20 for non-members. Tables for 10 are $175.
