The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and the Paulding County Fire Department will host the “September 11 Remembrance Ceremony” on the fateful day’s ninth anniversary.

The ceremony, Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Major Chad Hinton said, is their way of remembering the tragic day.

“For us here it was the fact that many of our brothers and sisters in law enforcement and firefighting who lost their lives up there and it really touches home,” he said.

The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. in Liberty Garden at Mount Tabor Park and will honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to others. On Sept. 11, 2001, a series of terror attacks killed more than 3,000 people.

Hundreds of the slain were first responders, including police officers and firefighters. Hundreds of lives were saved due to their acts of bravery in the face of certain danger.

The PCSO’s Honor Guard, the PCFD Honor Guard, and the Retired New York Shields of Georgia sponsored the ceremony. Captain Dennis Tate of United Airlines will be the special guest for this year’s ceremony to present a wreath at the memorial to honor the citizens and flight crew that were on board the flights of 9/11.

The ceremony originally was scheduled once every five years. Hunton said the PCSO stepped in and insisted on running the event annually. The ceremony will honor the survivors of the terror attacks and the family and friends of the fallen.

The event is open to the public.

“We would like for the community to come out and support the families of the victims from 9/11,” said PCFD Chief Mike Earwood, “This is a time when we as a Paulding County community can pull together and show our support for the people directly affected by this event, many of whom now live in our community.”
