The Wilkins Parkinson’s Foundation (WPF) is dedicated to funding programs to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is the Foundation’s belief that increased awareness creates a general groundswell of support for the entire PD community, from research to patient care to education and support groups.
The Wilkins Parkinson’s Foundation believes there is not enough information available to the patients, caregivers and the general public about Parkinson’s disease. Co-Founder Bill Wilkins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006 and struggled for over a year to find the appropriate informational sources on the disease itself, how to get involved in the community and where to find support through peer groups of other patients. The Foundation works to bridge these gaps through local, regional and national marketing efforts. The Board of Directors is made up of PD patients, caregivers, business leaders and individuals with non-profit management and pharmaceutical industry experience.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Man & Woman of the Year 2011
Northside Resident and 2011 Man of the Year Candidate - Cromwell S. Baun
Campaign 2011
Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited ten week fundraising competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Man & Woman of the Year" titles, by raising funds for blood cancer research. Our exciting 2011 campaign began on March 23. The fundraising competition culminates with a celebration of everyone's efforts on June 4th at the Loews Hotel in Midtown with dinner, drinks, entertainment, and a fabulous silent auction at the Grand Finale.
The Candidates
The ideal candidates are community and business leaders who are philanthropic, ambitious, socially active, resourceful and passionate about making a difference in the lives of people suffering from blood cancers. Their unstoppable ambition drives them to fundraise in a very large-scale capacity with record-breaking results.
Honorees
All participants raise funds in honor of the Girl and Boy of the Year. The 2011 Girl of the Year is Christina and the Boy of the Year is Jordan. Both of these children provide inspiration to the candidates and community around them.
History
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year campaign began in 1990 in San Francisco to honor John Spencer, a valued employee at Hastings Clothier in San Francisco and a Society volunteer. Spencer died of leukemia at the age of 39. It was in John's memory that Hastings began supporting the Society's Northern California Chapter with the San Francisco Man & Woman of the Year event. Now, more than 40 Man & Woman of the Year campaigns occur across the nation, making this a highly visible fundraising program.
The Reason
Although someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer every four minutes, there is great hope for the future. LLS is the world's largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improving the quality of life of patients and families.

Hemophilia is a rare hereditary genetic disorder in which a personâ??s blood is not able to clot normally. Some patients reach their lifetime insurance maximum at very young ages.
HoG's nonprofit pharmacy provides convenient home delivery of clotting factor and other medications at competitive prices. In addition, HoG provides trusted resources for medical providers and rewarding opportunities for volunteers and donors. To find out how you can help Hemophilia of Georgia, please visit www.hog.org
In 1988, several members of our community came together to provide sustenance and hope for 14 of their friends who were too sick to prepare their own meals. This demonstration of compassion and empathy, combined with hard work and the financial support of a caring community drove the creation and evolution of what is now Open Hand.
Today, we are the largest provider of home-delivered meals in the country. Our staff of 120, working alongside hundreds of dedicated volunteers, provides medically-appropriate meals, nutrition education, counseling and coaching services on a daily basis to 5,300 men, women and children in 17 Georgia counties who are challenged by diabetes, heart disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS and kidney disease, among others.
Open Hand operates with the same core values and guiding principles as we did in 1988-a passion for winning through trust, transparent leadership and a dedication to diversity. All decisions are guided by our purpose, our commitment to community, and a mutual respect for each individual's contribution to the fulfillment of our mission.
Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless 1035 Donnelly Avenue, SW Atlanta, GA 30310
Feeding hungry children and families, housing for the homeless, preventing homelessness through financial assistance, clothing, furniture, training, employment, and counseling to stabilize families in crisis.
Shelia used to live in the Techwood Homes Housing projects here in Atlanta and had lived there all her life. She was slightly off most of the time. It seemed as if life had passed her by and she constantly fought to get up each morning. The kindly visit from the Hosea Feed The Hungry staffer ironically also named Shelia, with food, toiletries and medical supplies, brightens her day every week though and we all know her as "mama". Several years ago,she was forcibly moved to Techwood Homes from Bankhead courts. The "rehabilitation" of the housing projects into mixed income housing displaced her yet again with a promise of return but she did not get a certificate to go back. Since then she has been moved from house to house and we are trying, with the help of the Lord to save her life. Shelia is just one of many whose lives have been displaced and by current strategic plans to tear down all the public housing projects in the city without effective re-location processes in place. Her "certificate" just gave her a license to be homeless. We have so many stories. Shelia now calls the office every day for her "Word of the Day" and we do the best we can to stop our busy work and talk to her. Unfortunately she has found out the Executive Director's extension number and sometimes five calls a day can be a bit stressful! But we all look forward to that call from Shelia everyday - our best, best supporter.
